The Future of Math Education

Manuvo joins education leaders at Stanford University to catalyze a profound transformation in how children learn math in Brazil.

Last week, Manuvo had the honor of participating in People Who Add Up: Math Learning for All, an international immersion program organized by the Fundação Lemann, Instituto Reúna, and the Lemann Center at Stanford.

The event brought together over 60 influential Brazilian leaders, including state secretaries of education and CEOs of major foundations to catalyze a profound transformation in mathematics education.

Designing desirable futures

During the summit, our founder Maurits Montañez presented Manuvo’s latest trend report The Future of Math Education in Brazil, co-created with Stef Silva, co-founder of Invisible Lab.

Following the presentation, Maurits facilitated a hands-on Futures Design Sprint where participants used insights from the report to visualize desirable futures, focusing on two critical pillars: equity and innovative pedagogical methods.

Leading voices and experts

The event featured a remarkable lineup of speakers, including:

  • Philip Daro: Lead writer of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Lisa Delpit: MacArthur Fellow and celebrated author of Other People’s Children.
  • Akihiko Takahashi: Professor Emeritus at DePaul University and expert in Japanese lesson study.
  • Karin Forssell: Director of Stanford GSE’s Learning, Design & Technology program and the AI Tinkery.
  • Esther Jiyoung Yoon: Senior Program Officer, K-12 Education at the Gates Foundation.

Looking ahead

The work created during this summit now serves as a foundation for the next chapter of math education in Brazil. At Manuvo, we are energized to continue this project, transforming this collaborative effort into scalable impact.

Our thanks go to the Lemann Foundation, Instituto Reúna, and Stanford University for this incredible opportunity, and to Stef Silva for her incredible partnership during this project.
